The most exciting game of round 8 in the BCL Americas took place in Cordoba. This derby game ended with only one-point defeat on the road of 3rd ranked Chilean Univ.Concepcion (1-5) to second ranked Argentinian Instituto (4-2) 87-86 on Monday evening. Guard Nicolas Copello (193-1992) saved the victory by scoring 20 points and 6 rebounds. American forward Jordan Loveridge (198-1993, college: Utah) contributed with 20 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. American forward Stephen Maxwell (201-1993, college: CSUN) replied with 19 points and 9 rebounds for Univ.Concepcion. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Instituto keeps a position of league leader, which they share with 3 other teams. Univ.Concepcion at the other side keeps the third place with five games lost. They share the position with Obras and Aguada.
One of the most interesting games of round 8 was a derby match between two teams from Colombia. The game took place in Medellin where second ranked Paisas outleveled visiting Caimanes (0-6) 98-75. Worth to mention a great performance of American guard Brandon Weatherspoon (193-2000, college: FAU) who helped to win the game recording 34 points (!!!) and Mike Miles Jr who added 23 points and 5 assists during the contest. Forward Yildon Mendoza (206-1996, college: Angelo St.) responded with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Defending Colombian champion maintains second position with 3-3 record having just three points less than leader Sesi/Franca. Caimanes at the other side still closes the standings with six games lost.
An interesting game for Argentinian Obras (1-5) which hosted in Buenos Aires second-ranked Brazilian Flamengo (2-4). Third ranked Obras managed to get a 10-point victory 85-75. The winners were led by Juan Brussino who scored that evening 19 points and 6 assists. Even 22 points and 6 rebounds (was perfect 13-for-13 from the free throw line !!!) by Alex Negrete did not help to save the game for Flamengo. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Obras maintains third position with 1-5 record having five points less than leader Sesi/Franca, which they share with Univ.Concepcion and Aguada. It was Flamengo's third loss in a row. They keep the second place with four games lost.
In the last two games of round 8 Paisas lost to undefeated Astros on the road 72-125. Astros destroyed Caimanes on its own court 140-69.
The most impressive performance of 8th round was 23 points, 9 rebounds and 11 assists by Daishon Smith of Astros.
